Designing AI.
Understanding

implications.

I study how we can design AI and digital technologies that support people, and how we can turn what we learn into knowledge for future designs.

Design principles.
How they emerge.

Design principles are one of the central ways design science turns what it learns into guidance for future designs. Yet developing them is difficult: principles can become too abstract to guide design or too closely tied to a particular artifact to travel beyond it. With Robert Winter, I conceptualize their development as navigation through a design knowledge space, connecting modes of reasoning, levels of abstraction, and five moves for developing stronger design principles.
